Returning to my first post, I felt that effective communication is essential and that written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills are important to me. Through these 12 weeks, I still believe that these aspects of communication are crucial. However I found that there are also other areas that I cannot over look.
The part on writing good/bad news messages left a rather deep impression on me. I realised that writing a bad news message is definitely not an easy task. One needs to take into account the feelings of the other party while delivering the message across in order to minimise the impact of the negative news.
The other part of the module that I found useful is the research project. Prior to this course, I have not done any projects that require survey analysis. During the last few weeks, I have learnt to formulate survey questions and draw conclusions from the data gathered. During the project, as each person will have his/her own viewpoints, it allowed me to recognise the importance “give and take” or compromise so that a reasonable decision can be made.
I also believe I benefited a lot from the job search sessions. I had never written a job application letter before and had no idea of its importance. But now, I realise that our resume and job application letter are the two most important things which more or less decides whether or not we will be granted an interview for the job we seek. In addition, the mock interviews gave me a idea of the questions I can expect during an interview, which I feel will better prepare me for future interviews when I graduate.
To conclude, I do not regret taking this course. It has definitely made me more aware of the various area of communication which is important in life.

I would like to specifically highlight the word 'awareness' as stated by Joyce. I believe that most of us in this course knows how important is effective communication. But being aware of the importance of this skill is one which is put across to us in this course.
ReplyDeleteI personally had not written a formal job application letter as the jobs that i worked in previously were part time jobs which did not require any CVs. This course had raised my awareness on the importance of an impactful job application letter. I believe that the first impression is always important for the employer, and this comes in the form of the job application letter and resume.
Indeed, the resume and job application letters are vital in netting a job. They give your future employers their first impression of you. Getting the resume and application letter right is crucial and I am sure you are more prepared for a job search now.
ReplyDeleteThe research project provides a valuable opportunity to practise what we learnt about interpersonal communication in the module. There must have been various times when these newly acquired have helped you handled the situations in a better way throughout the project. If you keep practicing these skills, you will be come a really effective communicator in no time.
I agree with you totally that the research project is indeed one of the most helpful for us in the future.I've learnt a lot through this module and have defintely found a very good blogging buddy like you ! Cheers !
ReplyDeleteJoyce, you had pointed out the interpersonal communication needed within a team. This research project has also given me the learning opportunity to put into practicing the knowledge that I have acquired in this module. Effective interpersonal communication has vital importance in the working place, and especially we have to work with people from different country and different background.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to you, this is the first time I have written a resume and job application letter. This module has given me great insights of the importance of a resume and job application letter in leaving a good impression to the employer. I also believe that if the process of writing a resume is carried out with effort, a person can even discover more about the himself and his suitability to the job/industry he is going to engage into.
